Exploring Medical Mistrust, Vicarious Trauma & The Role of CRPs

Individuals who work in Communication and Resolution Programs (CRPs) bear witness to some of the most intimate and painful details of a person’s life. Building rapport and trust with patients and families who have been harmed by medical errors is a key aspect of CRPs. Historically and recently, events like COVID-19, political unrest, cultural conversations, etc. have influenced perceptions of trust in healthcare organizations. We will provide an overview of some of these recent events and their role in medical mistrust. Trial consultant, Sarah Murray, will provide her unique perspective from her work conducting jury research, witness preparation, and providing in-court support. Dawn England will discuss the role trauma plays in cognition and behavior and how it can show up in CRP case management. Angela Nelson in-house counsel for University of MN Physicians, will share her perspective on how CRP programs have informed how she manages and resolves cases. Finally, a brief overview of vicarious trauma and strategies to build resilience will be presented.

Speakers:

  • Sarah Murray, PhD  - President & CEO, Trialcraft, Inc.
  • Angela Nelson, JD – Assistant Counsel, University of MN Physicians
