Communication and Resolution Programs: 5 New Developments Every Insurer Must Embrace

Communication and Resolution Programs (CRPs) are becoming the standard of practice for preventing and responding to adverse events.  Medical liability insurers are critical CRP participants and are leading innovations.  Five developments are reshaping the CRP field, including: 1) Innovations in CRP implementation strategies-Liability insurers and healthcare organizations are rethinking strategies to develop and implement comprehensive CRPs. New policy incentives and language, innovative training techniques to include a the “transparency bundle”, are speeding CRP implementation.  2) New tools for enhancing CRP success: A national set of CRP metrics has been developed, and certification and validation programs are emerging. 3) Promoting collaboration among insurers in CRP cases: Coalitions of insurers are partnering to advance CRPs and developing strategies for responding to cases that involve multiple insurers.  4) State CRP policies: CRP Legislation has been adopted in Massachusetts, Oregon, Iowa, and Colorado, with more states likely to move in this direction.  5) CRPs as tools to enhance provider wellness and engagement.  Increasingly organizations are drawn to CRPs programs’ potential to enhance the well-being and engagement of care providers.
